The interruptions may be triggered by breaking events such as the assassination of a major political figure, or by weather-related emergencies that require immediate, ongoing coverage. News broadcasters typically alert their network affiliates, telling them to stand-by; the network feed pauses for a short time to allow affiliated stations to join the report.
