To keep up with current events, watch the news. Whether it is breaking news of the 2016 election, or the 2018 North Korea crisis, you can find the latest news on a 24-hour television network. While breaking news can be a jargon-laden term, it still conveys the idea that the news is urgent and important. There are some differences between breaking and current news, though. Depending on the news outlet, breaking news can refer to any story that has a sudden or unexpected development.
Local stations may receive opportunities to break away from the network feed during evening newscasts. During this time, network talent rolls out the opening graphic and then pauses for a few seconds to reset coverage. After the reset, the anchor will remind viewers to watch local news updates. Afterwards, the station will rejoin the network feed. Occasionally, the station will join an “extended edition” of the network program. This method is particularly useful for stations that have a hard time getting local news coverage, and the network may provide a more comprehensive source of information.
While most news events warrant a quick interruption, some can be expected weeks in advance. For example, scheduled political speeches are frequently preempted. Election night coverage, candidate debates, and the formal inauguration of the winner are also popular examples of these events. These events can disrupt otherwise popular programming, such as a critically acclaimed show. But breaking news is a necessary part of current news coverage. It is also essential to note that breaking news can disrupt popular programs during prime time.
