Current News

Trending, also called breaking news or special report, is a type of coverage that broadcasters feel warrants an interruption of current programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) in order to report on a particular issue. It may be an important story with a high impact on society, or simply of interest to viewers who aren’t currently being informed.

Usually a broadcaster will notify all of their affiliates, through an internal alert service, that they are about to be interrupted by a breaking news event. Upon receiving the message, affiliated stations typically pause for several seconds to reset coverage. During this time, information is disseminated via an opening graphic that may feature music or other elements that convey the sense of urgency associated with a breaking news story.

Once a breaking news report has begun, a news anchor is introduced to welcome the audience and inform them of what is about to happen. They may introduce a video or image of the event, or pass it to a reporter who is in the field, if possible.

A breaking news report may last only a few minutes or be ongoing for hours (with some reports continuing for days at a time), depending on the nature of the story being followed. During the early stage of such coverage, details may be sketchy.

During coverage, network or local broadcasts will generally re-join their pre-existing programs in progress and sometimes re-start them at the point of interruption as well, although segments are often missed due to the interruption. This can be done to allow the news organization to maximize the amount of time spent reporting the story.
