Breaking news is a term used for current events that warrant immediate and widespread coverage, requiring stations to interrupt regular programming. Usually, this will involve a special report or cut-in that begins with a distinct sound cue and a countdown sequence (if a network newscast is already airing when the event occurs). A graphic identifying the breaking story appears on screen, with lower thirds and other graphics often modified to convey urgency. Historically, these breaks were reserved for highly serious events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy or a major natural disaster, but they have become more common on 24-hour news networks that are designed to be live and available for interruption at all times.

Depending on the severity of the breaking news, reports may last for only a few minutes or continue to run for hours or days. If the report is to continue for an extended period, network affiliates will typically insert their local station identification in place of a typical station imaging promo or program reminder.
