A breaking news story is a news event that warrants an interruption of non-news programming or, in some cases, of regular network newscasts. It may be an immediate emergency (such as a tornado warning), or it could be something that has been developing over time and requires sustained coverage. When an event is breaking, broadcasters alert their affiliates and pause their newscast to allow them to switch to the national network feed. The national network will typically have a graphic that reads “Special Report,” and will include an alert crawl.

Plus, a Florida woman’s booking photograph went viral and now the internet wants to save her. And we’ll investigate the case of Kouri Richins who allegedly spiked her husband’s drink with fentanyl in order to collect millions of dollars from his life insurance policies.
