Current News is a term for any news story that is considered “trending”. Oftentimes, these stories will appear on a network’s website and will also be shown in a ticker across the bottom of the screen. If the story is important enough, it may interrupt regular non-news programming. This is especially common on 24-hour news channels that have an anchor available to go live at any time, unlike before the advent of these networks when interruptions were only used for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which required nationwide coverage and forced many stations to stop their regular programming.
