When a significant breaking news event occurs, the network will interrupt non-news programming (or in the case of 24-hour news networks, regular scheduled programming) to provide immediate coverage. This is known as a newsflash or special report. Often, a countdown sequence will be displayed on screen as the station affiliates are alerted to prepare for an interruption and may be told to stand by so they can join the national news feed. A news anchor may then introduce the story and present updates on the developing situation. The opening graphic and accompanying music cue will also be distinctive, as well as lower third graphics to convey the sense of urgency.
