A breaking news story is an event that warrants the interruption of regular non-news programming (or, at least, regularly scheduled network newscasts). Breaking news events typically require all stations in a given market to interrupt their coverage for extended live reporting. When a breaking news story is identified, network affiliates usually display an alert crawl and use lower third graphics to convey the urgency of the news. Breaking news may also be announced with a distinct music cue and a special graphics opening known as a newsflash or a special report. Breaking news is often accompanied by live audio commentary from on-site reporters or analysts via phone, satellite or broadband. Prior to the emergence of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions were typically reserved for extremely urgent events such as a tornado warning or the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. These events would then be reported on with a ticker at the top of the hour, referred to as a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” by many networks.
