A breaking news story is a television or radio news event that elicits an urgent need for immediate news coverage. It may interrupt a regularly scheduled program, and is usually announced through a countdown sequence for network affiliates to switch over to the national news feed. The break may last only a few minutes, or can be sustained for hours or even days, especially when the event has national or international impact. In the past, only events that commanded immediate and widespread attention would cause non-news programs to be interrupted; however, since the advent of 24-hour news channels, it has become commonplace for a single event to prompt a continuous news break. This is also known as a Newsflash or a Special Report, and sometimes an alert crawl may be used in lieu of the standard station imaging promo or program reminder.
