LIVE: Secretary Kennedy testifies at House hearing | NBC News
Trending
Breaking news is a television or radio broadcast that covers a developing story that is so urgent that it must be immediately reported to the public, often interrupted and overlaid on other programs. It usually consists of a scrolling newsflash or ticker with a distinctive music cue, along with a special announcement from a network anchor. In the past, breaking news events would interrupt regular non-news programming or, in the case of a major national event like the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, a full-scale coverage that required numerous stations to suspend their regular broadcasts and interrupt their own newscasts with a special report. This was more common before 24-hour news networks were introduced, and the emergence of “Newsflash” and “Special report” tickers has reduced the need for such dramatic interruptions.
