Breaking news is a term that typically refers to an event that elicits such urgency that current non-news programming must be interrupted. This is commonly seen in the United States on television and radio, especially during severe weather events such as tornadoes and hurricanes. In the past, breaking news reports were often delivered through a cut-in in which stations would interrupt regular programming with a special crawl or alert that told viewers to tune into the station’s local coverage. This format is still used by some stations, although 24-hour news networks have come to use tickers during regularly scheduled programs that allow them to avoid the need for cut-ins and program interruptions.
