Current News is a term used by TV and radio networks to refer to a news event that warrants interruption of normal non-news programming or, in some cases, an interrupted broadcast of a regular scheduled newscast. A network will typically alert its affiliates that a breaking story is occurring and ask them to stand by. A countdown sequence will then be displayed, giving stations the opportunity to switch to the network feed in order to carry the breaking story live. Once the broadcast has been switched over, an opening graphic will appear with a distinct music cue to signal that the news is now being carried on the network. This graphic, sometimes referred to as a “Newsflash” or a “Special report” (see below), is commonly used for highly urgent and nationally relevant events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage and required numerous television stations to interrupt their normal programming.
