Current News (also known as breaking news, special report, or news flash) is an interruption of normal programming by a television network to cover a particular story. A break in coverage may last for a few minutes, several hours, or longer, depending on the event being covered and the time and resources required to cover it.

A newscast in progress when a breaking news story occurs will usually pause to allow the other network affiliates to join in. There is then a brief opening graphic, sometimes featuring music and accompanied by a voiceover, to accentuate the importance of the news story. The newscast will resume after the events conclude and will usually be followed by a short outro.

Local stations will also be given the opportunity to take over for local news if an event is occurring in their area and there are reporters at the scene. The local station’s news director decides whether to follow the national network feed or stay on the air and cover the story as a separate program.

Unlike radio, which usually does not have a “breaking news” theme, most broadcast networks have an internal alert system to notify all their affiliates of an incoming breaking news event. The network will then start a reverse countdown to let the affiliates know that the coverage is about to begin. The station will then begin to roll its opening graphic and announce the cut-in, if possible.
