Trending is the name given to a segment on a news program that discusses stories of current interest. It is usually the first thing viewers see on the screen when they tune in to a television or radio station and can be presented as an alert crawl, cut-in, or newsflash (or special report, in some cases). In the case of a major breaking event such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, a national network newscast will pause or break to allow affiliate stations to join the feed and provide coverage; this is known as a newsflash. Occasionally, lower third graphics are altered to convey a sense of urgency.
