In television, radio and print, breaking news is a story that is so important that it requires an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming, or, in the case of a network newscast, a countdown to allow affiliates to switch to the national feed. The break usually begins with a graphic and distinctive music cue, and may be accompanied by a news anchor. “Newsflash” and “Special report” are common alternative terms for this type of cut-in.
