Television news has been on the airwaves for decades. Then cable TV took it on the road. Suddenly, there was more choice than ever. This drove voters into deeper political silos.

But if viewers were tired of hearing about the same old issues, streaming could help. It allows people to watch news whenever and wherever they want. They can also customize their experience.

News networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. Several of them have regular nightly news programs, while others offer documentaries and analysis. Some are available free. Others are available for a subscription. In all, 85 percent of U.S. households subscribe to at least one of these services.

Streaming also offers news that arrives in real time. Viewers can opt to skip ahead or follow a particular topic. Streaming has proven to be popular with both partisan and general audiences.

Another streaming option is the NBC News Now service. It produces about 31 million hours of programming a month. A significant majority of its audience is under 45.

Similarly, Fox Nation has attracted 1.5 million subscribers. Fox has demonstrated that TV audiences will pay for quality content.

Streaming is likely to reshape the way political news is covered. Online video streaming will not be hampered by limited TV licenses. Plus, it is not bound by expensive negotiations with cable companies. Therefore, it is expected to attract new overtly political news operations.

Moreover, the number of consumers who prefer streaming is growing. Specifically, more Americans are spending more time watching streaming programming than television.
