Breaking news is a news story that requires an interruption of regular programming or, in the case of network television, a pause of current non-news broadcasts so that affiliated stations may switch to the network’s feed to receive breaking news coverage. A special graphic, often with a distinctive music cue, is used to signify the change in programming. Traditionally, these breaks were reserved for events of extreme urgency, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, but in the era of 24-hour news networks, such breaks are now commonplace and even for less pressing stories. The term is also sometimes used to refer to special reports or analysis during regularly scheduled newscasts.
