Breaking news refers to various types of news that is important in the moment. It has replaced the more traditional term, “news bulletin” and is often used by local news stations to emphasize the importance of the story’s exclusivity. Not all viewers may agree that breaking news is significant, so be sure to check the news sources’ terms before using them. In some instances, it may be more accurate to use the terms “breaking news” and “special report.”
After the breaking news story has concluded, the network or local station may resume its regular programming. In other cases, the coverage is passed to a reporter at the site of the event, who may share more information with the audience as the story progresses. However, if the news is too important for the anchors to continue the program, a news channel may cut the broadcast.
