Breaking News is a type of news story that warrants an immediate interruption of current non-news programs (or in the case of network newscasts, a countdown sequence to allow affiliates to switch to a network feed). A special graphic or music cue often introduces the breaking news and a ticker is used to provide updates. Before 24-hour news networks became common, such breaks were typically reserved for stories deemed so urgent that they would require nationwide coverage and a need to interrupt numerous stations. The term is also sometimes used to refer to breaking weather news, which traditionally only caused programming interruptions during severe, ongoing threats such as tornado warnings.
