Current News has many terms. Some of these terms are used interchangeably, while others are specific to certain news types. “Breaking news” is often used to describe the biggest story of the moment or a story that is currently live. Alternatively, it may refer to a story of broad public interest. “Just in” is also often used.
Breaking news stories can interrupt programs and newscasts. These interruptions can occur during prime time or during overnight newscasts. In such cases, the program can continue where it left off, or it can be joined in progress and resumed from there. For example, in April 2017, ABC interrupted a new episode of Scandal during the Shayrat missile strike. Fortunately, the show was able to resume the episode.
During a break, the network may continue showing the live shot of the anchor. The local station, on the other hand, may cut to video. The network will usually then switch back to the newscast. This transition may take a few seconds.
