Breaking news is an announcement on television or radio of an event that requires immediate coverage, forcing a broadcast to interrupt non-news programming. The breaking news is usually announced through a graphic and distinctive music cue, indicating the need to stop what is currently airing. The graphic may be placed on top of the regular lower thirds, or in a separate ticker. In the case of network news, a countdown sequence will be displayed to allow affiliates to switch to the national feed in time for the breaking news report.
