During the early days of streaming news, major news networks invested hundreds of millions of dollars to set up and run their streaming operations. While they’ve done well with their streaming investments, they haven’t exactly nailed their audience’s expectations. They’ve been left behind by their critics.
In its first year, CNN+ failed to attract viewers. Fox News Channel and MSNBC earned a combined profit of $3 billion. They haven’t missed their chance to capture the streaming market, either.
Streaming news is delivered on demand, meaning it arrives when viewers want it. It’s also much cheaper for the networks to archive and distribute their programming. That’s why they’re looking to earn a share of the $3 billion profit in 2020.
When news breaks during prime time, the newscaster may interrupt the programming. He or she may pause the network feed to allow other network affiliates to join in the coverage. Afterward, the programming can be restarted. During these interruptions, the station may cut to a video of the story.
Breaking news may also interrupt local newscasts. The anchor may remind viewers that more details will be available on the local station. He or she may also roll the opening graphic again. In most cases, the lower thirds may be altered to show a sense of urgency.
During the JFK assassination, CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite provided coverage. But the coverage reflected crude technology of the era. It also featured a four-and-a-half-minute ad block that featured the insurance company Liberty Mutual.
