Trending is an article or segment of a newscast that talks about topics that are currently popular with viewers. It may also talk about what is trending on social media platforms or websites. Trending is usually presented at the top of the hour during a regular newscast or as a cut-in on non-news programming. It is often accompanied by a countdown sequence to allow network affiliates to switch to the national feed and a special graphics package with a distinctive music cue, which can include lower thirds or a graphic overlay. Breaking news is an event of extreme urgency that requires a station to interrupt non-news programming, or pause the ongoing newscast in progress (and in some cases, interrupt local coverage). This was common before 24-hour news networks existed.
