Breaking news is an event which elicits coverage by television and radio networks, requiring them to interrupt regular programming for live reporting. This is most common for nationwide events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and for severe weather events such as landfalling hurricanes or tornado warnings. In the case of a national network’s breaking news event, the station will usually alert its affiliated stations, asking them to stand by and then announce the event with an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. In recent years, 24-hour news networks have begun to use a Special Report ticker to highlight specific breaking stories, eliminating the need for cut-ins.
