When a breaking news event happens that requires immediate coverage, a network will often interrupt its regular programming (or its local affiliates’ regularly scheduled newscasts) with a special report. This report may feature live anchors, or a studio news team conducting interviews or analyzing the situation via phone, satellite, videoconferencing or other means. Depending on the urgency of the story, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of immediacy. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, network news interruptions were usually reserved for extremely important national events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
