What’s Trending

In television and radio broadcasting, breaking news is a news event that is of such urgent nature that it interrupts non-news programming, or in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts. Breaking news events are typically announced through an alert crawl or cut-in, which includes a countdown sequence to allow station affiliates to switch to the network feed for coverage. The break is often accompanied by a distinctive music cue. Before 24-hour news networks became common, such breaks were reserved for major stories, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which prompted numerous stations to suspend their normal programming for live coverage.
