Breaking news is current news that warrants an immediate interruption in the regular broadcast of a non-news program (or, in the case of network-affiliated television stations, in regularly scheduled newscasts). Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions were rare and usually reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or widespread natural disasters. Breaking news is often marked by a distinctive opening graphic and a special music cue, as well as altered lower thirds and other graphics to convey the urgency of the story.
