Breaking news is a term used to refer to events that are so urgent that they require the interruption of current non-news programming or, in the case of network newscasts, a break from the normal program feed. This type of news is usually presented through a special graphics opening and distinctive music cue. It may also be referred to as a newsflash or a special report. In addition, if the breaking news event warrants it, lower thirds and other graphics are often altered to convey a sense of urgency. Breaking news reports can be a few minutes in duration or can continue for hours or even days.
