Current News is a term used by television and radio stations when an urgent breaking news story warrants the interruption of non-news programming. The resulting break may last only minutes, or it may run for hours or days depending on the nature of the event. A newsflash or special report may be issued, and lower thirds and other graphics are typically altered to convey urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were usually limited to national events requiring widespread coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, or severe weather events requiring nationwide coverage affecting many local stations.
