Breaking news is when a major event occurs, such as a natural disaster or the assassination of a political leader that requires immediate nationwide coverage and thereby interrupts regular programming on television and radio. Broadcasts will usually interrupt their current non-news program and may also alert network affiliates to stand by for the breaking news report, often using a special graphic. In the past, this type of break was only used for urgently important events that elicited nationwide coverage and prompted stations to interrupt their regular programming (or, in the case of a national network newscast, their network feed). During breaks, lower thirds and other graphics are often altered to convey a sense of urgency.
