Today, a large share of Americans are watching television news on streaming services, which is setting a new standard in media. The technology is repurposing programming from cable channels and chasing breaking news.
Streaming allows viewers to watch news from anywhere. It also allows networks to archive their content. This makes it economical to build a library of content. In addition, it reduces the scarcity in the media equation.
News on streaming services is delivered instantaneously. For instance, a local CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh piped coverage of the Pittsburgh bridge collapse to streamers.
On the other hand, print news was stuck in time. Newspapers were set in type, and had to be brought to the newsroom by a reporter. However, a town crier could bellow a town’s news as he walked the village.
A newspaper’s layout placed the most important information at the beginning. This enabled busy readers to read less. That, in turn, made news more accessible.
As technological developments have increased the speed at which news is transmitted, the boundaries of journalism have become less defined. They have also allowed for a wider variety of “pro-am” relationships to develop.
Currently, the majority of NBC News’ audience is under 45. The network produces 10 hours of programming every day.
Meanwhile, the CBS News Network has taken local coverage of the Sacramento shooting and the Grammys. These stories would have preempted local coverage, but the stations have already nichified their coverage.
