Breaking News is the term used by broadcasters for a significant event that elicits nationwide coverage and requires the interruption of non-news programming or, in rare cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news reports were reserved for very serious events that demanded immediate attention, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Generally, the network will issue a brief alert to its affiliates and instruct them to stand by, after which a countdown sequence is displayed, followed by a special breaking news graphic with a distinctive music cue. The network may also integrate analysis of the story through in-studio analysts or via remote.
