Trending is a term used by news networks for certain breaking stories that are deemed as having the potential to affect a large amount of people or communities. During a trending story, the network will interrupt current non-news programming and/or regularly scheduled newscasts to cover the story. If a network’s regular newscast is in progress, the station will usually alert its affiliates to stand by for a break, and may even run a countdown sequence to allow time for the affiliate stations to switch over to the network feed. This type of interruption is also known as a newsflash or special report.
