For decades, TV news has been the mainstay of cable and broadcast TV. But the recent arrival of streaming has set off a flurry of innovation in this storied medium.
Streaming allows news outlets to deliver news when and where it’s needed, instead of waiting for the news wheel to turn. Rather than just reporting today’s news, it can also offer up a comprehensive look at what’s happening around the globe. It’s also a good way to archive content.
Streaming news has become a major focus for the major networks. CBS, NBC, Fox, and CNN all have active streaming operations. They’ve been pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into their streaming endeavors. The results have been impressive.
A number of free news streamers are now touting the cable-quality content they can deliver for free. Basically, they’re telling consumers that they can save money by cutting the cord.
To be clear, the streaming industry hasn’t yet become a bona fide fad. That will come in time. However, the major players have been testing the water for several years.
It may be too soon to tell whether the streaming market will grow faster than the cable and broadcast industries. Still, it’s easy to see that the new competition will have an impact on the industry.
Several news companies have launched high-speed streaming services. As of this writing, there are five major streaming networks: ABC News, NBC News, MSNBC, CNN, and Fox. These news providers offer everything from reruns of popular television shows to documentaries and nightly news programs.
