As the media landscape transforms, TV news is likely to take a new look. Streaming video has a lot of advantages, including the ability to reach viewers anywhere, anytime. It also reduces the scarcity factor in the media equation.

Historically, broadcast and cable news has been a profitable business. But with commercial-averse consumers vying for attention, new players are popping up. These include online news operations, free news streamers, and partisan news outlets.

For instance, one of the most popular free news websites, Newsy, claims to have planted a flag in the streaming frontier. In fact, the company offers a slew of tools for journalists. This includes an easy-to-use journalist dashboard, a multichannel content distribution network, and targeting tools.

Another promising sign is that Fox has been attracting a steady stream of subscribers to its Fox Nation streaming app. It’s not the first time the cable king has entered the television news fray. The broadcaster is experimenting with a new formula.

A similar approach is being taken by ABC News, which has an Internet Ventures division. CBS News has been aggressively nichifying its local coverage. And it plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.

Several free news streamers are attempting to lure users with the promise of cable-quality content. They are essentially telling consumers they can ditch their cable subscription and save money in the process.

Ultimately, it’s unclear whether free online news will reshape the way we cover political events. For now, the proliferation of media choices is allowing voters to splinter further into political silos.
