Trending is a news feature that shows the stories currently being followed on Current News. When a story is trending, it will be highlighted in red. Trending will usually appear on the left side of the screen. If a breaking news event occurs, the network may interrupt current non-news programming or pause a regularly scheduled newscast to break into a special report with a distinctive opening graphic and music cue. The national feed will also pause to allow network affiliates to join the feed. Prior to the introduction of 24-hour news networks, breaking news was typically limited to extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted national, nationwide coverage that required numerous stations to interrupt programming.
