Current News is an interruption of a television or radio program (or, in some cases, of an online video stream) that focuses on a breaking news event. The story may be local or national in scope, and it is often a time-sensitive event that is not expected to last for long.
Breaking news and special reports are frequently accompanied by lower thirds that convey a sense of urgency and may include a graphic or sound effect that signals the importance of the information being relayed. An anchor welcomes the viewer to the broadcast and introduces the story at hand, usually followed by a graphic of a timeline of events.
During the broadcast, details of the breaking news may be sketchy or limited, especially during the early stages of coverage, as the information is often incomplete and inaccurate at the time of its dissemination. If the broadcaster has a reporter on-site, they may share more detailed information with their audience.
During network and syndicated coverage, the feed pauses in the middle of the event to allow affiliate stations to join the feed. This is usually facilitated by an internal alert system that the master control of each station uses, and is also accompanied by a countdown to a specific point where the newscast is cut-in. During this time, the newscast may be anchored by a local talent. The anchor is typically reminded of the fact that more details will be provided on their late local newscast and on the network’s overnight news program (if applicable) the next morning, and that they can find more information at the network’s website or by visiting a sister station.
