Trending is a term used by television and radio stations to identify the top stories generating the most viewer interest. In North America, the trending topics are usually highlighted via a scroll at the bottom of the screen. This is often combined with a headline newsflash or special report that interrupts current non-news programming (or occasionally, regularly scheduled newscasts) to cover the story. When the news event is especially urgent, a countdown sequence may be displayed to allow network affiliates to join the national feed. This is often accompanied by a distinctive opening graphic and music cue. Breaking news was once restricted to extremely important events that required nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
