Breaking news is a type of television and radio reporting that covers a news event which, due to its seriousness or urgency, requires the interruption of regular programming. It is often accompanied by an alert crawl, a graphic, or both. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news was restricted to events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which prompted stations to interrupt regular non-news programming. In recent years, some networks have shifted to special tickers for select breaking stories during their regularly scheduled newscasts, lessening the need for cut-ins.
