Breaking news is a segment of a broadcast in which an urgent event or development in the news requires a sudden interrupt of regular non-news programming. Typically, a national network will alert its affiliates that an interruption is imminent and ask them to stand by for a special report or Newsflash. The breaking news will be displayed on the screen, usually with a distinctive graphic and music cue. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, the use of cut-ins or alert crawls was limited to severe weather events. When breaking news interrupts a regularly scheduled newscast, the network will often display a countdown to allow station affiliates time to switch over to the feed.
