Trending is a term used by television and radio stations to talk about current stories that are popular on social media. These trends are talked about by the station’s news anchor and are usually related to politics, entertainment or weather. Trending can also be referred to as Newsflash or Special Report. Newsflash or Special Report typically occur when a major breaking news story occurs that warrants an interruption of non-news programming. This type of break is more common in 24-hour news networks where a live host can interrupt regularly scheduled programming for breaking news. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, this type of break was usually only reserved for events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or other highly urgent situations that required nationwide coverage requiring multiple stations to interrupt regular programming.
