Trending is the name given to a feature segment in which a news anchor reports on events that are currently occurring or have recently occurred. It also can refer to a special report that is part of a regularly scheduled television or radio program, where the program itself may not be interrupted for the report (such as in the case of breaking news that would require the cancellation of regular commercial advertising). When this type of report is used, the broadcaster typically alerts its affiliates and their schedules, telling them to stand by and await further information. This is especially common for 24-hour news channels, as their programs are usually prepared to be interrupted at any time.
