In television and radio broadcasting, a breaking news event (also known as a newsflash or special report) interrupts non-news programming to cover urgent events such as natural disasters or acts of war. Such events may require network affiliates to interrupt their regular programming to join the network’s feed, and a countdown sequence is usually displayed on screen to allow them time to do so. Depending on the severity of the event, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, programming interruptions were typically reserved for major events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
