Breaking news is a segment of television or radio broadcast coverage of a recent event, such as an accident, a political scandal, a natural disaster or a severe weather event. Traditionally, breaking news events were covered with interruptions of current non-news programming (or, in some cases, regular network-affiliated newscasts), but the advent of 24-hour news networks has made special reports more common. In some cases, a station may interrupt its regular programing with a graphic and a distinctive music cue that alerts viewers to the significance of the story being reported.
