When an event occurs that demands immediate coverage, networks interrupt regularly scheduled programming. This is called breaking news or a special report and can occur over television, radio or cable. Often, a network will alert its affiliate stations to interrupt their own regular broadcast to switch to the network feed to carry the report. The station identification is typically overlaid during the news report instead of through a commercial break or station imaging promo (which would be more likely for the main newscast itself). Historically, this kind of breaking news only happened with events that required national coverage and forced multiple stations to interrupt their own programming. For example, the assassination of John F. Kennedy prompted many stations to interrupt their non-news programs with the news of his death.
