A breaking news story is one that occurs so suddenly and with such impact that it elicits nationwide coverage, requiring all affiliated stations to interrupt regularly scheduled programming (or, at least, a portion of the regular program) to provide live news reports. Usually, the network will alert all affiliates that there is a breaking story and tell them to stand by. Then, once the network feed is established, a countdown sequence will be used to allow other stations to switch to the special report. Breaking news breaks are typically accompanied by a graphic and a distinctive music cue, as well as a ticker that displays the latest information.
