NPR’s Trending explores the stories that are grabbing people’s attention across the country and around the world. This week: a new report accuses the wife of Cesar Chavez’s longtime labor organizer, Dolores Huerta, of abuse and rape; a Utah jury convicts Kouri Richins of spiking her husband’s drink with fentanyl in 2022; and how unmanned drones that cost thousands are reshaping conflict around the globe.
Breaking news is a report that interrupts regular non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts) to cover an event or story of a particular urgency that warrants immediate coverage. The term breaking news is often abbreviated by TV and radio broadcasters to “Newsflash”, or in the case of 24-hour news networks, “Special Report.” Breaking news reports may be accompanied by a distinctive graphics package and a unique music cue.
Before the existence of 24-hour news networks, national events that prompted urgent coverage typically triggered an interruption of regular programs on individual stations, with a news anchor or special guest introducing a newsflash at the top of the hour.
