Trending is a breaking news story that elicits nationwide coverage, requiring many television and radio stations to interrupt regular programming for the event. It typically begins with a special graphic opening, usually overlaid on top of station imaging and/or music cues to alert viewers that the program will be interrupted. Breaking news stories may also be accompanied by an audio clip of the event. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.[4] Now, it is common for networks to use a “special report” ticker during regular programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
