When an event occurs that requires current news coverage and necessitates interruption of other non-news programming, network broadcasters may interrupt regular schedules with a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” segment. This is often used for emergency situations, such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks; or if the story elicits nationwide coverage and requires all affiliated stations to suspend their own non-news programming to provide simultaneous national coverage.
