Breaking news is a news story that requires an immediate interruption of non-news programming, or of regular, ongoing news coverage such as a regular television or radio network newscast. The story is often presented by a news anchor with a special graphic overlay, usually accompanied by a distinct music cue and lower thirds that convey urgency or severity. Previously, breaking news was limited to severe weather events, such as tornado warnings, which required a cut-in from normal programming; now it is common for 24-hour news channels to interrupt regularly scheduled programs with special reports.
